Pinhole cameras are delightful!

MERLIN cameras are the most creative tools for learning darkroom photography... they're designed to be safe, rugged and economical!

The MERLIN & Little MERLIN paintcan pinhole cameras
MERLIN cameras provide a lot of fun while learning! They combine maximum creative potential with great value. Professor K's innovative design gives everyone from kindergarten to adult a safe and easy to use camera. The cost is intentionally low so that schools, families, child care, organizations and clubs can easily afford to offer an exciting photo program.

The MERLIN cameras are the perfect vehicle for blending art & science education. Made for tough handling by kids, they're versatile, rugged and ready to go. You can even use them under water! They are an important pinhole resource for an increasing family of photography enthusiasts, including students, teachers, artists and scientists.

MERLIN pinhole cameras are popular in college and high school programs, both basic and advanced. Joseph Garcia made this picture in his college photo course. His enthusiasm is evident!

The features of a MERLIN pinhole camera

A precision drilled 0.02 inch (0.5 mm) pinhole is located in the center of the label. A child-safe washer opens the camera top and a flexible magnet serves as the shutter. Any photographic film or paper can be used in MERLIN cameras. There is plenty of room inside the camera to place your paper or film at different distances from the pinhole, which changes the angle of view. You can also experiment with different curves and planes to change perspective inside the camera & create many 'special effects'. It's excellent for a science fair project!

MERLIN pinhole camera opener and instructions / exposure guide

MERLIN camera features: at left, the round, child-safe opener on top; instructions & exposure guide are right on the camera so you can't lose them. At right, a flexible magnet provides the clever solution for a shutter (you can peel off the white cover to add your own name or artwork). The rubber band keeps the magnet secure while you're traveling or looking for a good scene to photograph. All are included with the camera. MERLIN cameras are protected by a patent and a registered trademark.

You can enjoy pinhole photography... even if you don't have a darkroom!

Here's how to make pinhole photos no matter what your physical resources are. If you have a darkroom, consider yourself lucky! But you can make pinhole photos in any room or outdoors with two additional items from a photo supplier.

The Little MERLIN camera easily fits inside a dark photographer's changing bag, so you can make and store a lot of exposures before processing. Now add a film developing tank and you can process pictures in the classroom, kitchen or even on location! The tank should be the type without a post in the center (you can find them in stainless steel or plastic).

Complimentary Cameras for Education... will resume in late October (we are traveling for the summer).

Besides offering ideal products at affordable prices, we always find a way to support teachers!
The direct complimentary camera program successfully concluded with hundreds of cameras donated to schools and educational programs. Now, when your school places an order for 5 or more pinhole cameras of any size you will receive 2 complimentary Little Merlin cameras!

Jim Kosinski teaches photographic arts & science to students of all ages and abilities (faculty at the BAC in Boston, Hartwick College; a Tufts University fellow; plus K-12 public & private schools, museums & workshops). Photo credit goes to Sarah Kat Keezing.
This image was made by placing a Polaroid 4x5 film holder in a MERLIN pinhole camera and then taping a blak plastic bag over the top. The flexible bag allows for pulling up the protective sleeve that covers the film, keeping the camera dark until the exposure is made, then sliding the cover back over the film for processing.
